WINNERS OF STUDENT PSA COMPETITION NAMED

October 15, 2009: NABEF and the Broadcast Education Association have named the winners of their Freedom of Speech public service announcement competition. USC student Stuart Mouritzen won first prize in the radio category, Central Michigan University student Theresa Rozwadowski won second place, and Biola University's Melodie Turori and Rob Croft took third prize. Three winners for TV were also announced, and all were acknowledged at a Freedom of Speech luncheon held by the NAB today.

"One only has to follow what is happening in Iran right now to appreciate the significance of our own right to free speech," NABEF President Marcellus Alexander said. "The PSA contest reminds students in college communications schools across the country that free speech is fundamental to the very foundation of broadcasting."

BEA Exec. Director Heather Birks said, "We are honored to partner with NABEF and the McCormick Foundation to highlight these quality student productions. These students were selected from a talented pool of entries, and they all showcase their insight and creativity regarding freedom of speech."

The winning students were presented with scholarships of $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place, and $1,000 for third place. Participating on a panel at the luncheon were U.S. Broadcasting Board of Governors Governor Blanquita Walsh Cullum, 3 Roads Communications founder Russell Hodge, Burson-Marteller Managing Director/Media Paul Rodriguez, and Society of Professional Journalists President Kevin Z. Smith.
